Midnight at the Parish Church

It’s past midnight at the parish church

And thereabouts in the bushes lurked

A gathering of characters

Having many quirks

They jumped and screeched

Making such a clatter

And it seemed they could reach

The roof with no ladder.

Up a drainpipe they went,

Only giving pause

When that drainpipe bent

Like a bendy straw.

Their overall behavior

Wasn’t very conducive

To winning any favors

When they’re always so elusive.

For we knew who they were,

Those figures in the night.

Gray and black striped creatures

Who scatter in daylight.

Raccoons depend

On all their trash hoarding

But it must come to an end

Or we’re only supporting

Man’s worst friend.
