Madison strolled through her grandparent’s front door wearing bright, red leather pants and a black top full of sequins and glitter. A cropped white jacket and fuzzy Santa hat hat completed her costume. Once inside the elegantly decorated foyer, Madison hovered next to the grandfather clock near the door. From this vantage point, she had an expansive view of the party underway. Her grey eyes very quickly scanned the crowd, noting the guests were the usual distant cousins and various colleagues of her grandparents’. Most were milling about the brightly lit Christmas tree, illuminated by its pearly-white glow. The well-decorated tree matched the heavily-laden table in all its red, white, and gold bits and baubles. Jingle Bells played in the background as Madison’s eyes continued to roam, finally landing on a tall, handsome man she knew as her grandmother’s former medical student.
The enigmatic doctor had made an appearance at past events, and Madison’s gut told her he harbored something dark and mysterious. He stood by the table, pouring a small cup from the Wassail bowl and sipping the hot, mulled cider. He surveyed the crowd, much the same as Madison had, and nearly choked on his drink when he saw the hosts’ granddaughter making a beeline for him. His mind flashed back to the past and a lecture hall where Madison’s grandmother had given a memorable speech. Professor Kinkaid was as intelligent as she was fiercely beautiful; even tonight, all these years later, she still radiated elegance in a silver, off-the-shoulder floor-length gown. The stunning young vixen currently sifting through the throng of mingling people, however, was an entirely different breed of beauty, sure to raise his anxiety levels even higher.
Madison slipped past the roaring fireplace, hung with stuffed stockings for herself and her parents who’d passed away when she was just seven years old. She eyed her grandfather, asleep in his favorite chair, letting out a small whistling snore with every other breath. She pushed through a group of her grandmother’s relations, gossiping away in the middle of the crowded room. Her steely eyes never left their target. She was only feet away from the doctor now.
With a surge of excitement, Madison stepped forward and extended her hand, “I don’t believe we’ve been formally introduced,” she stated boldly, “I’m Madison Kinkaid.”
As gentlemanly as he could manage, he politely shook her hand. “Lovely to meet you, Miss Kinkaid. I’m Dr. Reginald Harper. Your grandmother was my instructor many years ago. I recall her speaking of you.”
Madison blushed, “Oh, really? Then I fear you have me at a disadvantage, for I know nothing about you.”
Now, it was the doctor’s turn to blush, “Yes, well… what is it you would like to know?”
“Well,” Madison gave a coy smile, her eyes sparkling mischievously, “let’s start with… everything.”
